Free Software founding fathers at La Sapienza University.
Magistral lecture by Bruce Perens and Richard Stallman at the University of Rome
At the department of computer-mediated communications of the School of Communication Sciences of La Sapienza University of Rome, Prof. Arturo Di Corinto will moderate two speeches on the ethics and practice of free, open source software, by Richard Stallman, founder of the Free Software movement, and Bruce Perens, founder of the Open Source Initiative.
The event, in collaboration with the Free Software Foundation Europe, the italian Free Software Association, Linux User Group La Sapienza, Wikimedia Italia, will be an opportunity to listen to an account, by the leading actors of the evolution of free/libre and open source software, that will show how such practices have radically changed the perception of informatics by the general public, by promoting an alternative to proprietary software models like that represented by Microsoft.
During the same day, discussions will be held about the differences among free and proprietary software, about legal and technical advances in free software licenses, and about the latest controversies about issue of software patents. Free software associations will host exhibits and informational booths on their activities. In particular, the italian Free Software Association will present a study on the ethical and economic necessity of the promotion of free software in Italy.
During such event the following institutional reppresentatives will be present: Giulia Rodano, regional commissioner for Culture, Sport and Shows, On. Pietro Folena, president of the Culture Parliamentary Commission at the Italian Parliament, and On. Vincenzo Vita, commissioner of cultural and informatics policies of the Province of Rome.
After a brief introduction by the dean of the School of Communciation Sciences, prof. Mario Morcellini, Richard Stallman first, and Bruce Perens next, will each make their speeches which will be followed by sessions of questions and answers. At the end of such presentations, free software association will present their present projects and goals.
The event, free of charge and open to the public, will be held Thursday June 7th from 9.30am till 1.30pm at the Aula Magna della Caserma Sani, located in Via Principe Amedeo, 184. It is reachable walking from Termini Rail Station or by the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele metro station.
